AutoCAD became a major competitor to MicroStation, another commercial CAD program. In 1983, AutoCAD introduced a 'peer-to-peer' networking scheme to share data. AutoCAD's has been continually upgraded and revised in subsequent releases.
Today, the program is still the most widely used commercial CAD program in the world, and is the standard within the building and construction industry. It remains the only 3D CAD tool able to deal with large projects with extensive documents, along with being the only program able to work with large images like from satellite imaging, drones, and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and the only program able to import multi-million line 3D files.
The first version of AutoCAD was available only for the Apple II and MicroSoft CP/M, until Macintosh versions were later introduced. Later versions of AutoCAD were also available for DOS, Windows, and UNIX platforms. AutoCAD runs on most computers running Windows. In February 2012, AutoCAD LT, a stripped down version of AutoCAD, was introduced for Apple computers running Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" operating system.
