This summary extracts tweet data from the American Society of Hematology conference (1-4 December 2018) using the official hashtag #ASH18 and an associated hashtag #ASH2018. Data detailed here and methods here.

There were 11,381 tweets between 1 and 4 December inclusive, posted by 1,751 tweeters, with 25,117 retweets. Overall 226 (13%) tweeters received 80% of retweets (from 6,770 tweets), while 615 (35%) tweeters received no retweets. (from 965 tweets).

I selected tweets from each of the days of the conference, aiming for a spread across the whole period.

Initially there were 198 tweets selected using the following rules:

- 52 tweets from 1 December (min 16 retweets)

- 52 tweets from 2 December (min 16 RTs)

- 49 tweets from 3 December (min 15 RTs)

- 45 tweets from 4 December (min 14 RTS)

I then excluded tweets that were clearly from pharmaceutical companies or biotech companies including biotech investors (n=16 and n=12 respectively). The excluded tweets were spread across the 4 days of the conference: 12 on day 1, 4 on day 2, 6 on days 3, 6 on day 4.

The top 20 tweeters, by retweets received, are shown below. I will analyse the data further when time to produce an analysis of tweeters, retweeters and mentioned accounts.

Tweets with #ASH18 hashtag were substantially more likely to be retweeted than tweets with the #ASH2018 hashtag as shown below.
