The core product is a 2D/3D design, drafting, and documentation software package with a number of extensions that are used to support industrial design and graphic illustration. The design capability includes free-form and constrained design, contour, survey, modeling, viewports, and editing. Designers create 2D and 3D objects and make technical drawings and documentation.
Another core function is a link to the other Autodesk products such as Autodesk® AutoCAD LT® and Autodesk® 3ds Max®. Autodesk® Revit® Architectural Package is available for architectural and interior design professionals.
AutoCAD 2015 contains changes to the interface, document management, and many other features, to support working with non-automated drawings.
History 
AutoCAD was originally developed for the Apple Macintosh by Brett King and Martin Gross on the IBM PC as an outgrowth of the AutoCAD in Reality product, which was developed for the Apple II computer. 
A completely new, original design was created by Brett King and Martin Gross to be released for the IBM PC, called AutoCAD. They used the name for it in homage to the AutoCAD command "Hello world!" written in BASIC for the first time by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs at Apple Computer.
When the software was released, it was free but for a fee, a 2D perspective drawing feature was added. After a few months of successful sales, the program was initially released for sale as AutoCAD in Reality.
AutoCAD was published by the Massachusetts-based Accelrys (later called Autodesk) in November 1982.
Software organization 
AutoCAD 2016 is a software suite made up of multiple standalone applications. The different applications can be installed or run simultaneously, in which case users can choose the desired application on the taskbar or in the Windows Start menu.
AutoCAD 2017 is a standalone application; it can also be installed alongside an existing AutoCAD installation.
AutoCAD 2018 is a standalone application. AutoCAD 2019 is a standalone application.

AutoCAD has multiple command line options and numerous automation features which allow users to write custom applications to interact with AutoCAD. History
The first version of AutoCAD (1.0) was released in 1989. It had a predecessor, AutoCAD LT, developed by Michael Casasola, which appeared a few years earlier. The program was originally developed at Intergraph Corporation's Westchester headquarters in New York City, and was intended to be a specific application to enable the production of automated plotters. In addition to being used to create the functional specifications for the automated plotters, it was later used to create specifications for other types of automated machinery. Since that time, the application has grown into a full-fledged CAD program.
During development, AutoCAD had no easy way of dealing with multiple edits on a drawing. This was accomplished by creating a second drawing that had the same data, but was named differently. This drawing, or the original, could be edited in a separate session of the program while the other was being worked on. When the original drawing was closed, it was replaced with the edited version. This was referred to as the "multi-edit protection". This was the default operation until AutoCAD 2000. In 2000, the multi-edit protection was replaced with an "unsaved edits" function.
AutoCAD 2018 uses the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system and includes a number of features including a multiple-monitor feature allowing the drawing area to span multiple displays.
