AutoCAD has 3D modeling tools that enable the user to draw and modify 3D objects such as shapes, lines, text, dimensions, and surfaces. The CAD program also has 2D drafting tools such as line, rectangle, circle, and spline drawing tools. AutoCAD LT is a less complex version of the CAD application. It runs on Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 10. AutoCAD has a built-in graphical user interface (GUI), but it is also possible to run the software under the command line.
As of 2018, AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT have become the leading CAD program and the most widely used commercial CAD program in the United States. The software is owned by Autodesk.

Creating a drawing
You can create a drawing in AutoCAD by using one of the drawing tools such as drawing tools, or by using the Freehand drawing tool.

To create a drawing:
In the Menu bar, click File, then select New Drawing.
In the New drawing dialog box, under the New drawing type heading, select 2D drawing, 3D drawing, or Sketchup drawing.
In the drawing type field, select one of the 2D drawing types, 3D drawing types, or Sketchup drawing types.
If you are using AutoCAD LT, under the New drawing type heading, select 2D drawing.

AutoCAD and other tools from Autodesk are available for free under the GNU General Public License. Several of the older older versions of Autodesk have been made available under the GNU Public License. Autodesk products are written in the programming language AutoLISP. The newer products are written in the Visual LISP programming language. The standard interface for the Autodesk line of products is through AutoCAD's API. Autodesk Exchange is the AutoCAD Application store. This is where AutoCAD plugins and some other add-on products can be downloaded. Most of the Autodesk Autodesk Exchange Add-on Applications are the result of third-party developers that have been granted legal rights to develop software that is compatible with AutoCAD and its interfaces. These Autodesk Exchange Add-on Applications allow for the increased functionality of AutoCAD's software. Autodesk Exchange includes Autodesk Exchange Apps. Autodesk Exchange Apps can be used to create custom tools for use with AutoCAD and its interfaces. Autodesk Exchange Apps are developed using the Autodesk Exchange Application Programming Interface (API). 
Autodesk Exchange Apps were the first of Autodesk's software products to be distributed online through Autodesk Exchange.
