The U.S. Department of Justice conducted a study on campus sexual assault in 2007. While times have changed, their research on students' reasoning behind not reporting their assault has remained consistent. Students had a multitude of reasons for not reporting; most worrisome being that they stated "victims may not define the event as sexual assault or report the incident because they are embarrassed, are reluctant to consider someone they know as a rapist, or do not understand the legal definition of sexual assault" (Pitts & Schwartz, 1993). Students fear others finding out about the occurrence as well as the seriousness of it. Students are often scared of authorities and questioned whether they would understand or believe them. Since then, campuses have strived to improve their reporting rate, encouraging students through different counseling services and information sessions. Though, there is no doubt that it is still a public health crisis and despite changing times, college is still in fact college. The society created on a campus has little changed from 2007 nor has it changed from the 90s. Partying, drugs, alcohol, and an associated social life create an environment that goes hand in hand with sexual assault, violence, and harassment.
