Microsofts mysterious Windows Cloud is supposedly a stripped-down version of Microsofts operating system that runs only Windows Store apps. Microsofts not commenting, but an early build that leaked over the weekend appears to be authentic and gives further tantalizing hints of what the company may have in mind. It only runs Windows Store apps, but…The idea behind running Windows Store apps only is that a Windows Cloud machine can be more easily managed, like a Chromebook. If you remove Win32 (traditional desktop) apps, you get greater security and control because users can only turn to web apps or the Windows Store.But this might not be the whole truth behind Windows Cloud. Brad Sams at Thurrott.com ran the leaked build of Cloud on an x86-based virtual machine. (Youd be crazy to run a leaked build on bare metal, so its understandable to see him run it in a VM.)Regardless, its clear that Windows Cloud (at least right now) can run on x86 processors. If that holds true for the official release, then theres no reason it couldnt run Win32 apps save for an artificial limitation put there by Microsoft.Interestingly, MSPowerUser said it was able to download, but not run, Win32 apps that were in the Windows Store via Project Centennial.Theres an upgrade path to Windows 10 ProWriting at Petri.com (the parent site to Thurrott.com), the same Brad Sams discovered theres an upgrade path built into the leaked build to go from Windows Cloud to Windows 10 Pro. That further supports the notion that Cloud will appear on at least some x86 hardware. Its also possible there could be upgrades to other versions of Windows in an official release.If Windows Cloud offers upgrades, then this is a serious mash-up of the ghosts of Windows past—the second coming of Windows RT plus Windows Starter Edition. Windows Starter Editions were versions of Windows from XP to 7 that were stripped-down and simplified for netbooks (sound familiar?). They also included an upgrade path to Windows Home or other versions via the Windows Anytime Upgrade. The odd thing is that if Windows Cloud is supposed to be a Chromebook competitor, why the upgrade path? Moving to Windows 10 Home or Pro defeats the point of a simplified operating system that is easier to manage. Plus, doesnt this suggest Microsoft will advertise upgrades to Windows Cloud users? Yuck.A Windows Store-only PC also is locked into Microsofts Edge browser, which lacks the popularity of Googles Chrome browser, with its vast extensions and app catalog. Thats like bringing a wet sponge to a gun fight. Can the Windows Store take on Google Play?This last point is more of a general question about Windows Cloud than anything weve learned from the leaks. A Windows Cloud machine has to rely on the anemic Windows Store. Meanwhile, its competitor Chromebooks, which were struggling to accumulate Chrome native apps, are about to gain a huge advantage. Google recently confirmed that all Chromebooks from 2017 and beyond will be able to run Android apps via the Play Store.Microsoft might have an advantage with productivity features like digital inking and possibly Cortana, but as weve seen before when it comes down to apps, the better store always wins.Why this matters: If theres one thing Microsoft hates, its watching another company make gains in the space it dominates: PCs. For that reason, the company needs to dislodge Googles dominant foothold in the education market with its Chromebooks. But Chromebooks started as minimally capable computers and have added features over time. Its hard to say whether people will be any more accepting of a pared-down Windows than they were before. Mozilla has fixed an issue in its Firefox browser where usernames and passwords were being recorded in the Windows Cloud Clipboard feature, in what the organization categorized as a severe security risk that could have exposed credentials to non-owners whenever users copied or cut a password.The issue was fixed in Firefox 94, released last month, but was detailed in more depth this week by Mozilla developers.At its core, the bug is related to Windows Cloud Clipboard, a feature added to Windows 10 in September 2018 (v1809 release), a feature that allows users to sync their local clipboard history to their Microsoft accounts.The feature is disabled by default, but once enabled, it allows users to access the cloud clipboard section by pressing the Windows+V shortcut. This grants users access to clipboard data from all devices, but the feature is also used for its clipboard history capabilities, allowing users to go through past items they copied or cut and re-paste the same data in new contexts, making it extremely useful for most IT workers.In a blog post on Wednesday, Mozilla said that they have now modified the Firefox browser so that usernames and passwords copied from the browsers password section (about:logins) wont be stored in the Windows Cloud Clipboard feature, but instead will be stored only locally, in a separate clipboard section.Mozilla said it considered this behavior dangerous, as a threat actor with access to a synced device could simply press Windows+V and access any clipboard data from a users past activity on other devices.This is especially dangerous, as there will be no trails in local logs about someone accessing or viewing data (such as passwords) via the Cloud Clipboard, Mozilla said.In addition, Mozilla also said it added this protection to Private Browsing windows as well, so nothing copied from a Firefox private window will be synced to the Windows Cloud Clipboard either, and not just user credentials.Tests performed by The Record today with a Firefox 95 browser confirmed that usernames and passwords wouldnt sync anymore to the Windows Cloud Clipboard.Tests performed on other Chromium-based browsers did not include this protection, and usernames and passwords from Chrome were synced to Microsoft cloud servers—so users should be aware of who might access their passwords if they have Cloud Clipboard enabled and are using a non-Firefox browser.
