If you want to do photo editing, you should consider purchasing Photoshop Elements (free) instead. I prefer the Elements interface and offer that preference in this book.
Photoshop offers many powerful features, and its range of effects is extensive. You can use layers to organize your images, apply multiple effects to one layer, copy and paste, and zoom in on an image.
The following sections help you become familiar with the Photoshop interface and explain how to navigate and work through the program.
Quickly opening a new document
When you open a new image, Photoshop starts you off with a new document. To start the program and create a new document, follow these steps:
1. Choose File⇒New to open the New dialog box.
2. Choose either Blank or Create a New Document, as shown in Figure 9-1.
If you want to create a new document, first choose Blank, and then click OK to open the New dialog box.

3. If you want to create a new document, use the New Document radio button to create a new blank file. Click OK to create a new file.
4. In either case, you can choose the size of the file and its type. I chose Portrait for the proportions and printed size to create a 4 x 6 photo.

Photoshop opens the image.
Drawing, drawing, and drawing some more
The Photoshop drawing tool enables you to paint on an image or create an illustration. You can use any drawing or image you want as the background for your drawing.
You can draw your own image or use one in your library. The Process tool enables you to move, scale, and rotate your image as you work.
Follow these steps to draw on an image in Photoshop:
1. Choose Window⇒Artboards to open the Artboards palette.
2. Draw on an image or create a new artboard in the upper-left corner of the page.
You can also click the New Artboard button to create a new artboard, which you can use to illustrate your image.
3. Select the Process tool, and click the point where you want to start drawing to set your start point.

Like the professional version, Photoshop Elements lets you edit and create images. You can make minor adjustments, such as color and lighting. It also lets you create new images. You can also use it to organize images and place them into books, web galleries, and slide shows.
Photoshop Elements is compatible with the.PSD and.PSB formats. You can open these file formats from within Photoshop Elements. If you are editing an image in Photoshop Elements, you can use the PSD or PSB file format without having to save the image back to another format first.

Other tools allow you to crop or resize the image. You can also add text, create complex graphics using the Geometric Pro tool, and make clip art and cartoon character artwork.
Photoshop Elements features an integrated package of filters. They let you change the appearance of a photo and adjust its color and contrast, without using an external graphic program such as Photoshop. You can even change the appearance of an image in a web browser.
Photoshop Elements filters are integrated into the navigation panel. You use them when you are editing images, and you can remove them when you are done. You can add the same filters to images you create.
