I am no expert when it comes to understanding the engineering that goes behind vinyl but there are many studies that show that higher quality sound comes from vinyl formats compared to other mediums. I can only speak for my own ears, but I personally have tested the iTunes version of songs versus the vinyl version that I own. I would say that that 99% of the time, the vinyl sounds more whole and warmer in tone. It’s hard to explain why it sounds that way, but I feel the music is fuller to me. From what I have read, the reason that vinyl sounds significantly better than digital forms of the same song is because the pressing is the closet replica of the original mix of that music in the studio. Digital versions are also recordings of the music of course but there are many paths that it has to take to be converted to that form. Through the transition, the sound quality is degraded. Vinyl pressings are much closer to the original recoding of songs in the studio and as a result they sound much better. Reggie Watts, a musician, comedian, and actor suggests that vinyl sounds better because "You hear it in the best possible context...mimicking it on the speakers it was mixed on."
