History
AutoCAD's history can be traced back to the late 1970s. The AutoCAD software and the introduction of the first CAD system, was originally a product called VCRAD (VCRad). At the time, it was revolutionary to produce such a system. The first VCRAD was developed on a Univac 1100 mainframe computer using an 8-inch floppy disk and microprocessor. A VCRAD stored data on the disk in the form of 3-dimensional coordinates.
In 1982, the first version of AutoCAD was released as "AutoLISP" for the Smalltalk programming language. It was developed at AutoDesk by Chuck Speight and Tom Chapman. In 1983, the company went public and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1984, Chuck Speight and Tom Chapman left AutoDesk to form a new company called ObjectARX, Inc., where they developed a new high-performance 3D graphics system. In 1987, the company was renamed to 3D Design Corporation.
In 1989, following the arrival of a competing CAD system, Autodesk released AutoCAD. The original AutoCAD ran under DOS and used the VCRAD file format. The VCRAD file format was replaced with the DXF file format in 1991. From 1989 to 1995, many of the data formats and commands were renamed, simplified or removed in AutoCAD versions released. The release of AutoCAD R12 in 1992 introduced a complete redesign of the interface to make it more like a traditional drafting program.
In 1998, a new version of AutoCAD called AutoCAD 2000 was released and was based on the new LISP object oriented programming language.
