I was grumbling at the idea of having to take a tedious psych class for my degree and was not looking forward to it at all.The first chapter of this book, I actually sent my instructor an email to ask if I was looking at the right thing--it wasnt about your typical idegosuperego stuff, it was about my definitions of success and identifying my role models, and I was very confused. Chapter Two brought me in more, Chapter Three had an assignment that required me to actually identify and type out four SMART goals for myself using parameters outlined in the book.Again, grumbling. Ive worked in corporate America and had to do SMART goals for yearly review and they were dumb and seemed pointless.I followed the book because I had to for my assignment, and wrote out the goals. It took me an hour just on that one assignment. But once I had those goals written out, with timeframes and in a way that would be realistic for my own tendencies, and that were actually catered toward my accomplishing my own life goals, it seemed silly not to at least try to work toward them.Life. Changed.I hate routine. Im a perfectionist and an expert level procrastinator and I get in my own way a lot. There were portions of this book that I swear may as well have been written directly to me. Through reading it, Ive managed to set myself up with a schedule that I built around my own quirks and that doesnt feel intimidating. Ive got a grid for tracking my habits. And I have a better understanding of why some of the challenges Ive had in the way of doing well are there and how to overwrite those behaviors in a healthy way.Ive seriously recommended this textbook (A TEXTBOOK!) to my friends who have been struggling with motivation. I wish I could give out copies to people I know. That is how much I loved this book.I was able to read it for free online through an agreement with McGraw-Hill and my school, but I bought a loose-leaf copy this week after I finished the last chapter so I can read it again and pay more attention to the exercises now that I have the full context of the book. Thats also how much I loved this book.Its so good. If this pandemic has really taken a lot of the wind from your sails and youre finding yourself feeling aimless and questioning yourself, its an amazing read. It looks like youre offline.
