Week 3: Travel Books
We will look at some of the most representative examples of books in relation to travel culture. Examples include travel writing, travel fiction and books that accompanied travellers all over the world. You will understand why and how tracing marks found in rare books is important. Closely examining and appreciating these ‘travel books’ will shed a new light on how we perceive our own world, by enabling us to imagine what we could not afford to see and experience otherwise. Toru Ishikawa and I will discuss and show you some fascinating examples of illustrated travel narratives from both Europe and Japan during the early modern period.
