Light-induced retinopathy is an important model of several human diseases that affect the retina. The light damage in mice is initiated by the photoisomerization of 11-cis retinal in rhodopsin. This leads to a cascade of events that damage the outer retina, inducing photoreceptor cell death by the generation of reactive oxygen species, and the death of glial cells and retinal pigment epithelium cells. The light damage also induces the dysfunction of the microcirculation and the retinal pigmented epithelium in mice. These different types of damage result in dysfunction of retinal cells and sensory reduction in mice.
