Music with Mrs. Leydic
As most of you know, being involved in any sort of musical activity is one of the most incredible opportunities that our school can offer your child. In this class your child will begin to learn the fundamentals of musical performance on both instruments (in person) and vocals (virtually), as well as, expand their knowledge on a variety of music genres and artists. What we do in the classroom has the power to transform their lives in so many ways. Similar to Marking Period 1, if you were to stop into our music classroom you would continue to see students:
·        Be patient and persistent with difficult tasks;
·        Delay gratification by working hard in order to sound better;
·        Develop curiosity, problem solve, and work hard with an end result in mind

Specifically for Marking Period 2, Kindergarten and First Grade virtually have been working with a curriculum that focuses on steady beat, levels of voices, simple rhythms, loud/soft/high/low sounds, and fast/slow movement in the music classroom. Students practice differentiating between singing, speaking, whispering, inner hearing, and shouting voices, as well as, perform steady beat and simple rhythms. Students also work on their ear training by listening for differences between high/low sounds and fast/slow tempos.

Specifically for Marking Period 2, Second and Third Grade in person and virtually have been working hard to review learned concepts from previous grades. For example, 2nd grade has been working with melodic and rhythmic patterns using simple rhythms through playing the boomwhackers. Students have also been working to identify and label simple small forms such as AABA and create rhythmic phrases using known rhythms and melodies in Chrome Music Lab. Something new students are working with this year is a music appreciation curriculum where students learn the inner workings of several different forms of artistic performances that can be analyzed and broken down in class. Specifically, students have gone backstage to many Broadway Musicals and performances such as Aladdin, The Lion King, and The Nutcracker Ballet to learn about different careers and how much work it takes to put on a major production.

Specifically for Marking Period 2, Fourth and Fifth grade have been continuing to review learned concepts from previous grades. Students focused on the C major scale and applied it to different pieces of music by playing different boomwhackers. Students also reviewed the concept of time signatures and rhythm durations. Similar to what students were learning prior to returning to the building, fourth and fifth grade continued their music appreciation curriculum and learned some of the inner workings of several different forms of artistic performances that can be analyzed and broken down in class.
