Rebekah Box, not only spoke from her own experience as a women and girl who participated in athletics, but shared other female athletes experiences. She shined light on the lack of the opportunity and the pay gap that comes along with being a female athlete in the 20th century. Box reminded readers that sports are commonly encouraged at a young age, but when it comes to opportunities beyond that they lack largely in the women's department. Box also spoke of her friend who is a player in the AFLW (Women's Australian Football League). In speaking with her friend Box discovered some pretty gut wrenching details. The women affiliated with the AFLW were being paid 20% of what their male counter parts had been, and their training was unpaid which was not the case in the mens league. This meant that these women had to maintain a full time job, while training full time and  full filing a playing schedule. Box also included many equality statistics, which all favored men, including men receive $179 million more in scholarships per year than women, and on average female athletes are being paid only 63% of what their male counterparts are being paid. This relates to my research question in terms of the lack of opportunity in women's sports, along with showing just how huge the pay gap is between women and their male counter parts. These conditions are extremely unfair and largely represent the inequality that women have experience all throughout history. The fact that these women stated that even if they just made enough money to support themselves, that they would be content shows that these women aren't asking for much. Just how big is the pay gap gap between male and female athletes?
