The History
The Anti-Mask movement has been around since the beginning of the pandemic and has been a big talking point throughout these past 9 months. This movement has causes thousands of conspiracy theories(coronavirus is a scam to remove trump out of office, masks don't work, masks don't allow for oxygen and, in turn, kill you, etc). Although the hashtag #nomasks didn't have much popularity before July, from July 13th-15th it had a huge spike in traction causing many people concern that this movement may have been correct seeing the hashtag trending on twitter and the sudden popularity. This caused individuals to look deeper into the conspiracies, begin to believe in their ideas, and questions the scientific proof already offered. It is a big reason that the hashtag is still often trending these days. What is interesting though is that the hashtag actually gained most of its traction because people were AGAINST the no mask movement and not for it.
