Providing Homes for Syrian Refugees

Syrian immigrants fleeing poverty and a war torn country find themselves sleeping on the streets in one of the worlds richest countries. Almost a decade and a half after a brutal civil war broke out in Syria and displaced millions, people are still fleeing war. However, upon reaching what they believe will be a new chance at life in a stable country, they are instead met with no housing and any tents they put up are torn down by police. Leaving these immigrants on the cold street, almost no better than their home they were force to flee, creates a critical homelessness problem. It is no secret that homelessness comes with it health issues and substance abuse, with will create a more dangerous society overall. Solutions to this crisis are twofold: first there must be a recognition of the problem and its effects by politicians, this creates the political will to make change. Secondly, there must be more time and money budgeted towards creating more low-income, affordable housing, rather than destroying make-shift encampments. If more homes are built and are affordable to immigrants just beginning to make their life than this crisis can be tackled and solved in due time.
