Lay Planning
ASOS:
Fast fashion companies with more money to spend on planning garment production will be likely to have a lay pre-planned in digital format which can be easily edited or moved while working . This is known as CAD lay planning. In terms of the types of lays a brand like this may use, there are different options for them to use in the cutting room:
Single Size Lay - this is when each piece of a single size are included in the lay. This is a faster and easer way of laying as the planning and laying becomes easier, allowing them to keep deadlines.
Section Lays - this is a multi-size lays technique which are made in a minimum of two perfectly rectangular sections; each section contains all of the pieces for one certain size. A company like ASOS are likely to do this as once again it is a quicker way of working. It is also an effective form of lay as there is less waste.
Straight Lay - Every ply is placed according to the marker length (full length of marker is taken). This is the most common type and most garments are made this way, so this is the way mass manufacturing companies would work.
In terms of direction of the lay, ASOS and other fast fashion companies use a zig-zag lay; this is when the fabric is spread without cutting from one end to the other according to the lenght. This process is continuous and used in garment mass manufactring industries.
