A U.S. military veteran and a federal prisoner with a seemingly endless supply of wood have teamed up to form a bonsai club.
Cedric Hall, 65, is serving a life sentence for an unrelated murder. He met Justin Peters, 34, at a prison woodworking program.
Both men became obsessed with bonsai as they spent the next two years working on more than 140 different kinds of trees.
"I've always wanted to do it," Hall said. "Just never had time."
They start each day by looking for a small branch from a big tree.
"Justin's done it before, so I trust him," Hall said. "He'll tell me that it's perfect or not, and I'll trust him."
Hall said he expects to work on the trees all day, and he can only do it at home in prison.
"You get tired after awhile," he said. "When I do this at work, I'm wearing a mask. You can't breathe good like this."
Hall decided to start the club so they could talk about trees with like-minded people.
"You have to be in a position where you're vulnerable so they can get to you, so you can't really do anything to them," he said. "And that seems to have worked pretty
