There are multiple different strategies used to empower individuals these include things such as person centred care, inclusion, decision making and information sharing. Making sure that as a practitioner you use person centred care towards the service user is important. person centred care means ’It is completely centred around the person who is receiving care. The term is constantly changing and developing as the needs of patients continue to evolve.’ As a practitioner you must make sure that the care is about that person, you could do this by writing a care plan, this could include times that they like waking up, going to bed or if they prefer wearing certain clothes on different days. If the practitioner makes the care about that service user it will make the service user feel happy and that they are being listened to. This will help with the service users self esteem and make them feel better about themselves. Communication is also linked to Person centred care as you must talk to the service user and ask them questions so that they feel included, speaking to the service user about their past is very important so you have an idea of their life and what they used to do, it also gives them a sense of belonging and make them feel like they are being listened to and have someone who they can speak to. (RCNI 2016) 
Also ensuring that all service users are able to access all areas of the building is essential, it will make the service user feel included, for example if the service user is in a wheelchair there must be ramps in place and doors big enough for the wheelchair to fit through. Also making sure they are able to be involved in all activities that they want to do is important as it makes them feel happy that they are included in activities. 
In a care home if you have a service user with poor eyesight who wants to play bingo on that is provided on a friday afternoon you must empower them to be able to do so. If the service user is not able to see the bingo cards then you must be able to find a way to help them be involved. This could be: Enlarging the cards so that the numbers are bigger and easier to see, you could provide braille embroided cards or even have a practitioner sit with them to help. However, you must try and encourage the service user to do the task on their own to ensure that you are empowering that individual.
If a service user started to develop early signs of dementia you wouldnt be able to go round telling all the family that visited them as it is a breach of that person’s dignity, you would have to talk to the service user to see who they would like that information passed on to. If you told all theire family members without them agreeing it could make them very anxious and upset. It could also make them angry as you may have upset the family and they did not want that. To go about this correctly you would have to ask the service user if they would like you to let any family members know, if they said no you should not breach that unless it gets worse and then you should tell the service users next of kin.
Decisions making is very important during empwerment, ensuring that the service user gets to decide what they would like to eat, were they would like to go and what activities they want to participate in helps the individual feel like they have a lot of control over their own life and do not feel like theor life is being lived for them. Having the individual pick out their own outfits for the day might makr that service user feel excited and happy that they are not being forced to wear something they do not want to.
