Babbage is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer, the Difference Engine, which eventually led to more sophisticated electronic designs, although all the basic ideas of modern computers can be found in Babbages Analytical Engine, programmed using a principle borrowed openly from Jacquard. 2 6 Beybazh had a wide range of interests besides working with computers, as described in his book Production and Equipment Economics. 7 His varied work in other fields has led him to be described as preeminent among many polyhistorians of his century. Portrait of Charles Babbage (c. 1820) Babbages place of birth is disputed, but according to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography he was most likely born at 44 Crosby Row, Walworth Road, London, England. A blue plaque at the corner of Larcombe Street and Walworth Road commemorates the event. His date of birth was given in his obituary in The Times as December 26, 1792; but then the nephew wrote that Babbage was born a year earlier, in 1791. Mary, Newington, London, shows that Babbage was baptized January 6, 1792, confirming his birth in 1791. 11 12 Babbage circa 1850 Babbage was one of four children born to Benjamin Babbage and Betsy Plumley Tip. His father was a banking partner with William Praed when Praeds & Co was formed. in Fleet Street, London in 1801. In 1808 the Babbage family moved to the old Rowden house in East Teignmouth. Around the age of eight, Babbage was sent to a rural school in Alphington, near Exeter, to recover from a life-threatening fever. For a time he attended the grammar school of King Edward VI. in Totnes, South Devon, but his health forced him to take private lessons again for a while. Babbage then joined 30-student Holmwood Academy in Baker Street, Enfield, Middlesex, under the direction of the Reverend Stephen Freeman. The academy had a library that inspired Babbages love of mathematics. After leaving the academy, he studied with two other private tutors. The first was a priest near Cambridge; Through him, Babbage met Charles Simeon and his evangelical followers, but teaching was not what he needed. He was brought home to study at Totnes School: that was at the age of 16 or 17. The other was an Oxford tutor, under whom Babbage reached a level in the classical subjects sufficient to be accepted into Cambridge University.
