Image manipulation is not only a complicated task but also an art that requires great talent and knowledge. Editing Images with the Layers Panel
Photoshop has layers that contain images, and these layers can be edited by placing new images on top of them, removing images from them, moving the images, or resizing them. You can also use the selection tools and masks to make changes to individual images within a layer. You do all this by using the Layers panel, and that's what the next few sections cover.
Creating new layers
To create a new layer, follow these steps:
1. Select a blank layer from the Layers palette, or drag a layer from the Layers palette onto a new blank layer below the layer you want to edit.
Note that the layers you created earlier in this chapter can be saved to a new image if you want to use them again in a later editing project. However, because you can create multiple layers within a single image, you don't need to save all your edits to any layers. You just click an existing layer and drag it onto a new layer.
2. If you're using the Layers palette, click the New Layer icon (refer to Figure 2-8) and Photoshop adds a blank layer below your existing layers.
3. If you're using the Layers palette, click the eye icon that appears to the right of the New Layer icon to hide the layer above your new layer. If you don't hide the layer, you may get a warning that "The layer is locked." In this case, select the layer you want to delete or move and press Delete or Move. To toggle the visibility of the layer, click the eye icon again to turn it back on.
