OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Jonny Gomes didn’t realize how much winning meant to him until a few weeks ago, when he was officially named MVP of the American League.
The slugger took one look at the trophy and noticed the weight of the past few months.
“I’m just going to hold onto it,” he said Thursday.
Gomes hit.298 with 23 homers and 89 RBIs this season and made the all-star game for the third time. It was his second league MVP award after winning the AL’s Player of the Year honor last season.
Gomes spoke about what it meant to get another MVP honor after last year.
“I just think about what it means for the guys on this team,” Gomes said. “When you get an MVP, it’s a great honor, but it doesn’t mean much when you’re not in the postseason. It’s nice for the guys on this team to get that for the league.”
Gomes has been the MVP of the AL for the past two years. He has gone to three All-Star Games.
“When you’ve got the Hall of Fame in your living room, it just means a lot more,” he said.
The 26-year-old first baseman and DH will turn 27 next month. He had a career-high 19 homers with the Red Sox before being traded to Oakland in February.
