Differentiation by Skill: When teachers think of differentiation, they often think of supporting students who are having difficulty mastering certain skills or content. Teachers use diagnostic and formative assessment evidence to determine a student's relative skill level. 
Typically, a teacher will make a decision about what a student needs in order to make growth. However, an alternative student-centered approach to differentiation by skill requires collaboration. For example, a teacher and student might review assessment data together, and then co-create a plan of action that will lead to growth. Students can also track their own progress using digital tools.
