While there have been other CAD programs, Autodesk is the only vendor to market a solution specifically designed to replace a CAD operator and their terminal. AutoCAD's developer reputation was largely earned by selling its software to commercial architectural firms and engineering firms, and by its early recognition of the need to develop a program that could replace multiple CAD operators and their terminals.
History
The first generation of CAD programs were introduced in the late 1970s. They were basically word processing programs with some basic drafting tools such as blocks, vectors and drafting standards. They were built on top of the mainframe computers of their time (IBM, Burroughs, and Fujitsu) and offered very little in the way of an interactive user interface. The development of these first programs was based on the concepts that CAD needed to be primarily an "off-line" process, and that the user interface of these programs needed to be very simple.
The original development of Autodesk's AutoCAD was not an overnight success. Autodesk's management hired an architect named John Walker to design an initial application that was not too similar to existing programs, and to convert the graphics code from the original DESQview to its own Graphics Engines.
Components of AutoCAD
The first component of AutoCAD is the core software. It consists of a set of programs that are used to create a geometric solid. (A geometric solid is any part of an object that cannot be cut or folded. It is not the same as a 2D drawing.) The first generation of CAD programs were very weak in this area. They could display the geometry of an object and take you through a very limited set of operations. The primary advantage of a geometry solid is that it allows other programs to access the object's data. This allows you to save the object as an image, archive it, and many other operations.
The second component of the AutoCAD package is the graphics engine. The graphics engine controls the display of the object on the screen. It is a set of routines that define the appearance and dimension of each feature of the object. The graphics engine also controls what you can and cannot do with the geometry solid. The most obvious example of this is the ability to move or copy the object.
