Sixty adolescents (33 girls and 27 boys) with idiopathic scoliosis were evaluated for bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine and for physical activity using a questionnaire. The average BMD of the whole body, spine, and hip was significantly decreased in girls as compared with controls, as were those of the whole body and spine in boys. Physical activity of the girls decreased to half of that of the boys. The activity level of the girls was significantly lower than that of the boys. The BMD was significantly lower in the spinal curves than in the noncurved lumbar spine. The BMD in the area of the curve was significantly correlated with the Cobb angle and the magnitude of the spinal deformity. The subjects with a Cobb angle of more than 30 degrees or a magnitude of the spinal deformity of more than 10 degrees had a significantly lower BMD than did those with a lower degree of deformity. These results suggest that adolescents with scoliosis have a lower BMD in comparison with non-scoliotic adolescents.Too much? Too little? Either way, the jury is in. The message is clear: "Don't shoot the messenger," says Dr. Rosemary Strickland, a member of the survey's task force and a neonatologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. "We've been doing a really good job getting blood lead levels down, and most parents I talk to are aware of it. But there are still pockets where it's a problem."
