The Department of Social Services operates a Universal Assistance Scheme which provides temporary assistance to eligible Lewiston residents who are unable to meet the basic needs of themselves or their families. Workfare is a way for people without physical disabilities to work in exchange for the help they receive. and acquire the skills needed to obtain and maintain lasting employment. The workfare program also includes training and education to help clients find employment.
