Originally developed by Arthur C. Nielsen as part of the in-house toolkit for Data Design Inc. (DDI), AutoCAD was first released for Intel 8080-based PC computers in December 1982. In addition to designing 2D shapes, it was the first popular application to use a two-dimensional raster (bitmap) as a graphics output, rather than a fixed-function graphics mode. The bitmap format provides greater flexibility in what can be drawn than a fixed-function graphics mode, allowing users to easily insert or delete objects, move objects, rotate objects, and resize objects. To facilitate the use of the new platform, DDI released a time-saving Altium drafting program called Precision Draft. Precision Draft was later packaged and sold with the PC version of AutoCAD as AutoCAD Drafting Toolkit. This package also provided basic drafting, project management, and 2D rendering features. AutoCAD became the most widely used drafting software package in the commercial world.
AutoCAD 2000 was released in February 1988, with three new features. The Point Features palette enables the use of a basic vector display. The Representation Palette allows users to choose from among the most popular coordinate representations available. The Feature Manager palette enables users to manage models by performing actions such as deletion and analysis.
By 1989, AutoCAD had become the leading CAD program worldwide. By 1991, the product had reached a cumulative sale of 1.3 million units.[2] That year, DDI was acquired by the Autodesk Corporation, now a privately held company. By 1996, AutoCAD had 3.1 million total users, although it was used more by architects than by engineers.[3]

Lymphocyte migration is important for the initiation of immune responses in peripheral lymphoid organs. Because chemokines and their receptors regulate leukocyte migration during immune responses, we have examined the potential role of chemokine receptors and their ligands in the migration of dendritic cells (DCs) through peripheral lymphoid organs. DCs were pulsed with B7-2 or CCR7 peptide and injected into the foot pads of mice, and the migration of DCs in draining lymph nodes was quantified by using confocal microscopy. By using retroviral and adenoviral vectors to transduce these peptides into DCs, we found that DCs responded to the chemokine receptor ligands CCL19 and CCL21. The migration of DCs transduced with a chemokine receptor CCR7 ligand was completely blocked when the expression of the peptide was sustained.
