Formative Assessment

Testing lets us know how students are doing and if they’re going at the right pace to reach the content goals of the class. However these graded tests don’t necessarily tell you where students don’t understand a concept or what skills they’re still trying to grasp. No one is going to write “I don’t understand this” on a test and by then, it is a little too late. This is where formative assessment can be useful. The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback. Examples of formative assessments are exit tickets, impromptu quizzes, silent classroom polls, draw what they learned in class and more. Formative assessments are low risk and not graded, which puts students at ease to express themselves freely. The usage of formative assessments can allow for a more student-centered classroom.
