Bailey Parnell discusses the unintended consequences social media is having on our mental health. Parnell discusses her own struggles with mental health and social media. She shares a story about her and her sister taking a trip and “going dark”, airplane mode on, no social media, no emails. She talks about phantom vibration syndrome. This is when you think your phone vibrates but when you go to check it there’s nothing there. Parnell also analyzes how many people, herself included, can be enjoying these gorgeous sights and our first response is to take out our phone and take a picture or video. The Center for Collegiate Mental Health found that the top three diagnoses on University campuses are: anxiety, depression, and stress. Many studies have linked high social media use with high levels of anxiety and depression.
