What Is AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is a computer-aided design (CAD) application designed to enhance productivity and creativity. AutoCAD is a desktop-based CAD application which can be used for both schematic and geometric drafting as well as for engineering design and detailing. The application was originally released in 1982 and has been upgraded with many additional features and enhancements over the years. Today, AutoCAD has more than 1.5 million users and supports Windows, Linux, and macOS operating systems.
AutoCAD can be used to create 2D drawings for any purpose, such as:
Organization and maintenance of design components
Representation of architectural plans and floor plans
Floor planning and construction documentation
Drawings for construction and maintenance of infrastructure and large structures
Design of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
Design of any machinery or machine part
AutoCAD is intended to be used for the rapid creation of standard drawings, and is not an integrated "Engineering on Demand" (EOD) application.

The AutoCAD API allows custom code to be written in native AutoCAD programming languages, such as C++, Visual LISP, Visual Basic, Delphi, and other.  The AutoCAD API supports applications for AutoCAD and external utilities such as Magics, and is available from Autodesk and 3rd-party developers. 
The AutoCAD 2020 API has an updated set of APIs, with improved documentation, additional sample projects, and command line tools (automation). 
Many applications allow users to automate functions within the application using AutoLISP or Visual LISP, as well as other APIs. 
For example, users can easily create a custom program that will allow them to open and close multiple drawings, prepare a drawing for printing, and create a printed output report.
Autocad for JBuilder 
AutoCAD is used to model construction projects and design layout for construction. JBuilder provides a number of tools for modelling of construction projects and helps in managing information related to designs for construction, including selection of objects to be used and setting up documentation. JBuilder is a unified modeling tool which combines construction modeling, 2D and 3D, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC design.
AutoCAD LT 
AutoCAD LT is a free, cross-platform version of AutoCAD (R14 and later). It supports creating, modifying, and viewing two- and three-dimensional models and drawings, as well as object data. It supports vector and bitmap graphics and is able to run on Windows 2000 and later, macOS, and Unix/Linux operating systems.
AutoCAD LT is installed by default on the installation media for Windows Vista. However, it is not installed on Windows XP or Windows 98. AutoCAD LT is available for download from Autodesk's website.
AutoCAD LT was discontinued in 2018.
AutoCAD Student 
AutoCAD Student is a product for students designed to allow them to get acquainted with AutoCAD. It has a basic interface, and additional functionalities for setting up and drawing on a simple or detailed model.
