When I was having internship in France where it is also practicing the high context culture just like my country. Every meeting, the boss just gave a small insight about the work we need to do, I had to observe carefully what are the messages behind all these small insights. I need to adapt to the way of French working and I am being treated as a normal employee like the other French, no adaptations unless if I ask them to slow down or repeat what they said. It was quite similar to what my country’s culture reflects however during the work, I must ask if I do not understand and it is not a problem to ask while in Asia it is the opposite because if you have too many questions, means that you do not understand and it is a problem with your boss or supervisor. Whilst the French are practicing high context culture, but in work they are mostly individual, everybody has their own space to work independently where it is also an opposite in Asia where we work collaboratively. Supposedly, Asian culture is indirect and I should have difficulty to face the differences but it turns out all just good as I am a very direct person when I work, I stayed as much as professional as I can. Therefore, I can assume the intercultural communication barrier can be breakdown by work attitude, behaviour and personality at the same time. Most importantly, based on my experiences, it is very important to adapt when we are dealing with high context-culture people as they wanted us to understand how their culture works normally rather than changing to what is something new.
