The first version of AutoCAD did not include a 3D function. The AutoCAD graphics engine was much slower than that of competing programs such as Pro/ENGINEER from PTC, DX/Designit from Autodesk, and AutoCAD LT/AutoLISP from Unigraphics. Early versions of AutoCAD included only a 2D drafting application, and 3D drafting capability was added in 1987 with version 2. In 1988, version 3 included 2D and 3D modeling and was released as an add-on module for UNIX. In 1989, version 4 featured a graphical user interface (GUI) with 3D modeling capability; the new layout and modeling technology made AutoCAD the most powerful 2D and 3D CAD package at the time. In 1992, AutoCAD SP1 replaced XPress as the default AutoCAD program; a separate version of XPress was released as the XPress 2000. Another version of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, was released in 1996. AutoCAD LT lacks 3D modeling features, but many of its drawing functions and commands are identical to those of AutoCAD.
AutoCAD (originally AutoCAD for Windows and later AutoCAD 2003) is an integrated software suite that provides 2D and 3D drafting, design, construction, and documentation, as well as post-processing functions such as CAD (computer-aided design), CAM (computer-aided manufacturing), and CAE (computer-aided engineering). AutoCAD is bundled with other Autodesk products, such as AutoCAD Mechanical, AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD Plant 3D, AutoCAD Structural, and AutoCAD Map 3D.

The user interface is a mix of windows, dialogs, and toolbars. The main user interface is based on the Windows operating system and provides menus, buttons, and toolbars.

Collaboration 
AutoCAD can be used by multiple people simultaneously within a single workgroup to gain efficiencies and improve productivity. The 2009 release of AutoCAD supports multiple-view tools, which allow the designer to toggle between various views.
AutoCAD 2007 introduced the ability to view files in the OpenOffice.org Calc spreadsheet format, enabling users to view engineering drawings with an Excel-like view. In addition, AutoCAD 2007 introduced the ability to view files in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), enabling users to view documents such as PDFs on the computer screen without opening the entire file.
AutoCAD 2012 introduced a new collaborative and collaborative editing mode. The collaborative editing feature is designed to allow users to work on a design document together from different devices and view information on different levels of detail. The feature also enables users to share individual drawings and make changes to the design that can be viewed and viewed by the other users. This feature was introduced in AutoCAD 2012 as part of the "pencil" feature that allows users to draw over files and erase mistakes on the fly.
Trademark dispute 
In 2014, a Maryland circuit court ruled that the word Autodesk is a valid trademark. The court ruled that the word Autodesk is a valid trademark for CAD software as well as Autodesk software for which Autodesk's registered the trademark.
