Nonsense Word Assessments

You are sharing DIBELS assessment data with a parent during parent-teacher conferences when the parent says, “I do not like the use of nonsense words. The English language is full of enough real words to learn. Let them learn to recognize what is real. Too much emphasis is put on fairy tales such as the 'Elf on the Shelf, Santa, Tooth Fairy," etc. Why complicate their minds with fake words?” How would you respond to this parent justifying the use of nonsense words on a basic early literacy skills assessment? Find a research article online that supports the use of nonsense word assessments. Include the link to the article and a short summary of its findings.
