Photoshop is available in both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS. If you work with digital photography, the full-featured Adobe Photoshop is your best bet, and Elements is good for light editing tasks. If you're a photographer, it's likely that you already have a copy of Elements on your computer, and Photoshop is for both graphics and photography.
Using Digital Images with Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements (`www.adobe.com/products/photoshop.html`) can't do everything Photoshop can, but it can do several things that you won't find in Photoshop. In fact, you can use Photoshop for a start, but it isn't a substitute for Elements.
Unlike Photoshop, which offers layer-based editing, Elements has an image-based editing method. And although Photoshop has a wide range of options for composite work, including masks and layers, this is only available in certain layers. Elements is a free program, so you don't need to purchase anything to get started.
You can purchase additional features and plug-ins for Elements from the Adobe site, but they aren't required to get started. For those of you who want to edit your images or create incredible effects, Elements has some editing tools and filters that you can use — but you may need to dig a little bit deeper to find them.
With its capabilities for image creation, editing, and tagging, Elements will grow on you.
Not surprisingly, the reason Elements is such a great app is the incorporation of features that Adobe has been known to add to the Photoshop app to make working faster. Unfortunately, Elements lacks some of the options and options Photoshop offers.
The main reason to use Elements is for its easy-to-use image-editing features. You can combine and enhance photos and create digital scrapbook pages easily. You can use Elements to crop images, create images from existing photographs, and even manipulate pictures from the Web with great success.
Because this book is about manipulating photographs with Photoshop, I'll focus more on the Photoshop features and leave the Elements options for readers who are already proficient with Photoshop.

Elements 7 is supposed to be a successor to Photoshop Elements 6. Unlike previous versions, it has many of the features of Photoshop (one of the most popular graphic design applications). Photoshop Elements 7 is included with some of the Creative Cloud Photography subscription packages and with many of Adobe's products. It can also be downloaded for free. Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 is a digital photo editing application for Windows and Mac.
Elements 7 adds the new features of Lightroom 4 to the application, a revamped UI, in-app storage, and cloud features. It also adds features that Adobe calls "Real-time edits" which give users the ability to edit and simultaneously save changes to their existing images. This is meant to help users who use Elements as a creative tool. Lightroom is made available for purchase on its own.
But if you have used previous versions of Elements, you will notice elements that have been changed. Element 7 has a completely revamped user interface that Adobe says makes it easier to use than the previous Elements versions.
Go to the Edit Menu by clicking on the arrow next to the New Photo button. (It's the first icon in the Applications Menu.) Then click on Layout. Select the Marquee tool and drag a rectangle that is a few pixels smaller than the image you are editing. Then click on the Select menu and choose Fill. This will automatically fill in the selection.
Press the Command/Control (Cntl) button on your keyboard and select Edit Elements (Alt-E), then select the Fill tool. Click and drag around the image in the selection you created, then click the Red, Green or Blue option in the toolbox.
The next thing to do is to go to the Render menu and click on Adjust Color. The Adjust Color dialog box will pop up. This is where you can adjust the level of transparency, blend modes, and colorize your image. If you are working with black and white or sepia images, you might try the white balance tool from the colorize menu.
You will notice that Adobe has moved the Tools tab to the left side of the window.
The Tools tab makes it easier to find the options you want to use. There are five main tabs: Document, Image, Image Tools, Paint, and Adjustments. (See Figure 1.)
