Significant Design Project
Daniel Libeskind is best known for the design and completion of the Jewish Museum extension in Berlin, Germany that opened in 2001.
The project took its form from an abstracted Jewish Star of David that is stretched around the site and its context.
The form is established through a process of connecting lines between locations of several notable and non-Jewish Berliners that provide structure for the building resulting in a literal extrusion of those lines into a zig-zag like building.
This design was the only project that implemented a drastic, formal design as an expressive tool to represent the Jewish lifestyle before, during, and after the Holocaust.
Libeskind also wanted to establish and secure an identity within Berlin, which was unfortunately lost during the second World War. He wanted to express the feeling of absence, emptiness, and invisibility from the Jewish Culture.
