In a retrospective study of patients operated on in our center for thyroid nodules, we recorded the five most common nodules: 6 adenomas, 1 follicular adenoma, 1 follicular carcinoma, 4 hyperplasias and 2 colloid goiters. The patients were divided into four age groups (under 20, 20-59, 60-79 and over 79). The nodules, whether functional or not, were all verified by surgery. Our aim was to better define the characteristics of these five tumors. Although the data could not be considered as definitive because of the low number of cases, the results show that the malignant tumors were relatively common in the younger age groups, while the hyperplasias and colloid goiters were most common in the older age group. However, hyperplasias are found with an increasing frequency in the younger age groups and they almost all disappear after two years. The follicular carcinomas, which are the most frequent malignant tumors in our series, mostly present in the youngest patients, whereas those of the non-follicular type occur mainly in the third decade. Our data therefore support the hypothesis that hyperplasias and colloid goiters are true lesions, whereas the follicular and papillary adenomas are benign tumors that should not be considered in the differential diagnosis of a thyroid nodule.Q:
