Throughout the memoir, Bui does an excellent job of demonstrating the subjects of race and diversity. An example is "anti-Asian racism." She brings light to the issue of living in America during an anti-immigration law. She shared her confusion and sadness from being hated due to her appearance. An appearance that many in the past labeled as the cause of lost lives in the Vietnam War. This memoir, even though written two years ago, brings relevance to what is occurring today, many feeling isolated and neglected through harsh treatment due to a pandemic. An article provided in class, "Anti-Asian Racism Is Taking a Mental and Emotional Toll on Me," states, "Since March 19, 2020, more than 1,700 incidents of anti-Asian racism have been reported to Stop AAPI Hate." It is also recognized by Comics Bulletin, who wrote a review that states, "The Best We Could Do is a moving memoir and corrective to Trump-era xenophobia." Another subject of diversity is diversity at work. Bui portrays the struggle of finding jobs due to their background. As spoken about in the course, many fear jobs becoming scarce. The article, "How the Model Minority Myth of Asians Americans Hurt Us All" states, "It is easier to blame a foreign country or a minority, or even politicians who negotiate trade agreements, than to identify the real power: corporations and economic elites who shift jobs, maximize profit at the expense of workers and care nothing for working Americans." Her parents struggled to find a job due to the reason that they did not recognize their education as valid.
