Cartography is the study and practice of making and using maps. Combining science  and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality can be modeled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively.The cartography of India begins with early charts for navigation and constructional plans for buildings. Indian traditions influenced Tibetan and Islamic traditions, and in turn, were influenced by the British cartographers who solidified modern concepts into India's map making. 
In Ancient India , the skill of cartography was almost unknown .The growth of trade and expansion of empires created the need for accurate maps.The Arabs and the Europeans developed Cartography , as they travelled long distances across land and sea. Contact with them introduced cartograpgy in India.
