Although the earliest releases of AutoCAD were available for Apple II and other personal computers, the software is primarily used on Microsoft Windows-based systems. Developer Autodesk was founded in 1968 by former MIT students John Walker and John Pratt. The company was acquired by The Carlyle Group in 1999, and was spun off from Carlyle as an independent public company in 2006. At the time of its IPO, the company was a leader in the CAD software market and had more than 13,000 employees.
