1800s
A blazer is traditionally a thigh-length, double breasted jacket tailored in either black or navy lightweight flannel. The brass buttons on the sleeves reflect the garment’s origins in late 19th-century British boating and cricketing culture. It is the 'middle child' as it is positioned between the formal suit jacket and the casual sports jacket  
The blazer has multiple origins, one being around 1825 when the rowing club of St Johns college, Cambridge wore the red 'blazer'. Another being in 1837 when the captain of the HMS blazer dressed his entire crew in navy-blue, double breasted jackets. It also could of acquired its name from the “blazes” or stripes, of country club jackets in the 1870s.
In June 1893, Vogue featured its first appearance of the blazer, a reporter wrote “Now that the boating season has begun, dressmakers and tailors are busy making up fetching yachting costumes” At the turn of the century the blazer became a staple in women's wardrobes to pair with a shirtwaist and a tailored skirt.
