In the late 1980s, the company began to diversify its business model and added different software products, such as AutoCAD Electrical. Another important milestone for the company was its release of AutoCAD 95 in 1993. This was a new user interface for the software that aimed at making it easier to use. By the end of 1994, AutoCAD was used by nearly 4 million people in 196 countries. The company was known to operate on an all-or-nothing basis. Once a product was released, it was thought that the company would only release updates if the product was generating high revenue.
In 1997, Autodesk acquired the Alias Group, a software company specializing in vector graphics. The Alias Group products were mainly used in the field of desktop publishing, such as page layout and illustration. In 1998, Autodesk released the first version of AutoCAD LT, a lower cost version of AutoCAD. This version was designed for home and small businesses. By the end of 1999, Autodesk had over 3000 employees and was operating in 50 countries. Autodesk is a leading producer of CAD software and one of the most popular software applications in the design industry.
