After the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, he was buried, and on the third day he rose from the dead. Before ascending to heaven, he appeared to his disciples in Galilee and gave them this command: All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father. and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And truly, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. (Matthew 28:18-20, NIV) This section of Scripture is known as the Great Commission. This was the last written personal command of the Savior to His disciples, and it is very important to all followers of Christ. The Great Commission is the foundation of evangelism and cross-cultural missionary work in Christian theology. The Great Commission appears in Matt. Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:15-18; Luke 24:44-49; John 20:19-23; and Acts 1:8. The great commandments that come from the heart of God call the disciples of Christ to do the work that God began by sending His Son into the world to die for lost sinners. For the Lord gave His followers the last commandment goes to all nations and that He will be with them until the very end.Christians of all generations have embraced this commandment for centuries. And believers will be accompanied by these signs: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new languages; they will take the snakes with their hands; and if they drink deadly poison, it will not harm them; lay hands on the sick, and they will be healed. (NIV) Luke 24:44-49 says: He said to them, This I have told you while I was still with you: All things must take place that it may be fulfilled which is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms. Then He opened their minds so that they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, This is what is written: Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (NIV) The Great Commission defines the ultimate goal of all believers. After salvation, our lives belong to Jesus Christ, who died to obtain our freedom from sin and death. He has redeemed us so that we can be of service in His Kingdom. Fulfillment of the Great Commission occurs when believers testify or testify (Acts 1:8), preach the gospel (Mark 16:15), baptize new converts, and hear the word of God teach (Matthew 28:20). Christians need to repeat themselves (make disciples) in the lives of those who respond to Christs gospel of salvation. Christians do not have to try to fulfill the Great Commission. The Holy Spirit is the one who enables believers to fulfill missions and who convinces people that they need a Savior (John 16:8-11). Mission success depends on Jesus Christ, who promised to always be with His disciples as He fulfills His mission (Matthew 28:20).
