Interoperability
AutoCAD supports import and export to several formats.  It can export to Microsoft Office 2007-2016 formats (including formats for Microsoft Office Architectural Desktop), as well as to formats used by GIS and CAD systems (including Esri).
In AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD, import from these formats requires third-party add-ons.  However, import from DXF-based formats is available in the native 'Import CAD' and 'Import DWG' features.  The LISP language makes it easy to write add-on for importing non-AutoCAD formats, such as from CADx Architect, Cadalyst's CAD system for use in a Microsoft Office environment.  The object and 2D lite languages provide a number of tools for such development.
Also, since 2013, the former AutoCAD 2006/2009 product line has been based on the same kernel as AutoCAD LT, and is able to import and export to the newer formats.  However, importing to the newer formats requires the user to have a registered copy of AutoCAD 2014 or later, since the newer formats are not backwards compatible.
History
Autodesk AutoCAD was the first computer-aided design product. It was originally based on the DWG format and the Macintosh platform. The first version was released on January 2, 1987.
