Belize Sugar Industries Ltd. (BSI) was founded in 1963 and has been producing sugar in the northern town of Orange Walk since 1967. An efficient sugar operation at Tower Hill is the foundation of the nations sugar industry, which is of vast societal importance to Belize, supporting 15 percent of the countrys population. Sugar is also essential to the economic health of the nation, as it is one of the largest exports and contributes around 5 percent of the countrys Gross Domestic Product (GDP). BSI grinds 1.3 million tons of sugarcane each year with an average daily milling throughput of 6,800 tons. Tower Hill receives sugarcane from more than 5,000 independent cane growers and produces enough sugar to meet the demand of the domestic sugar market with the balance exported as raw and food-grade sugar products to refineries in the United Kingdom and United States. Additionally, adjacent to the sugar mill, BSI produces renewable energy in its stand-alone power plant. The green energy powers the sugar-making operations and exports home-grown energy to the nations public power grid, providing 15% of the nations needs, which is an essential component to increase Belizes energy security, because the country is heavily reliant on imported energy from overseas. It was clear to Cabinet that it is unlikely that an agreement will be reached before the start of the crop in December 2021.Cabinet noted that the 2021-2022 cane production estimate is 1,355,324 metric tons of sugar cane, an increase of 157,324 metric tons over last years production, which is near the milling capacity of the Tower Hill Sugar Factory. Taking into consideration downtime due to mechanical failures, sugar cane quality, and unpredictable weather among other unexpected delays, Cabinet views it as critical that the 2021-2022 sugar cane harvest begins in December 2021 as is programmed regardless of whether or not a new agreement on the Commercial Cane Purchase Agreement is reached between the BSCFA and BSIASR.In the interim, Cabinet believes that the current Commercial Agreement should be extended by the parties for not more than six months.Cabinet supports and expects that dialogue and negotiations will continue in good faith during the grinding season and is hopeful that a fair and balanced agreement will be reached before the end of June 2022.Cabinet recognizes that the sugar industry is the main socio-economic livelihood of northern Belize, is a strong foreign exchange earner, and contributes to 15 percent of direct and indirect employment.Ends Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI) was founded in 1963 and has been producing quality cane sugar products since 1967. Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSIL) crushes more than a million tons of sugarcane per year, producing 114 000 ts of sugar. BSIL directly employs nearly 500 people and farms 4 000 acres of cane. BSIL is a vital member of the local economy, as it also processes the cane of 6 000 independent growers, who farm roughly 55 000 acres. All of the farms qualify for the Fair Trade certification, which provides additional compensation to local farmers and helps foster sustainable businesses and communities. BSIL and its independent farmers are the largest employers in Belize.BSIL produces raw sugar, demerara specialty sugars and white sugar. While the white sugar is sold within the domestic market, more than 85% of BSILs total production is exported as raw sugar to the EU and US markets, or as demerara to the UK and Canadian markets.BSIL also operates a 32.5 MW biomass cogeneration plant that produces and sells renewable electricity to the Belize power grid, supplying a quarter of the countrys electricity.
