How is Diwali celebrated?
The significance of Diwali is that families all celebrate it differently and follow different traditions. As for my family, we decorate a platter with small candles, usually in a specific design and we would place it near the front door. We use candles to represent the motto of "darkness to light". Additionally you see alot of art throughout this festival, usually being very unique and intricate designs of Rangoli (a colored sand). Many families would also visit, where they would usually bring sweets. Other traditions would also include using firecrackers and even fireworks.
Many people also ask, what is done over the 5 days of Diwali? Usually the festivities don't begin until later on throughout the festival. The first few days people clean their homes, shop for gold and decorate their houses to bring good fortune and wealth. The actual traditions happen throughout the 4th and 5th day where families come over and say prayers, exchange gifts, eat sweets and play music.
Overall this festival is meant to bring joy and prosperity to others, and to acknowledge gratefulness within the ones surrounding us.
