Digital Divide in K-12 Schools

As technology becomes increasingly prevalent in our schools and homes, the need for access to quality internet increases. Today, our students depend on technology to access resources, Zoom meetings, educational videos, for virtual learning. When the pandemic first began last March 2020, families struggled and wondered how their children were going to access all that they needed from home without Internet. This is what we call digital divide. The gap between families who have access to multiple devices and internet at home versus families who only have access to one device or none at all. Lack of internet access at home may be due to various reasons such as economic status, unreliable internet strength, or living in an area with no internet availability. Individuals may also find it difficult to afford more than one device at home which makes it difficult for students to effectively learn from home. Having access to internet and devices at home is so crucial to a successful educational experience for our students. In order for students to engage in discussions from home with their classmates, attend online classes, and submit work online, they need access to internet. Even students in person at school still need access to internet at home in order to enhance their digital literacy skills. With login credentials from school or the library, students can have access to endless educational resources such as online books, educational online games, videos, so much more. Fortunately, there are ways for educators and librarians to help these families in need of reliable internet services and devices. As educators, it is crucial that we inform and advocate for those in need of services so that we may bridge the digital divide gap.
