Self-reflection
Our first meeting topic was the problems of climate change in Hong Kong, Atlanta and Xi’an. There were six participants to discuss it with 3 Hong Kong students and 3 GSU students, most of them including me were passive and embarrassed to express their own views. There are only 1 GSU student Daryl had shared his thoughts, but the other GSU tended to attentively listen. I reflected that we can show more kindness and actively invited them to answer or ask questions, so we can discuss it more effectively. We discussed the cause and problems of global warming, also the foresee of its future outcome. I got insight into global warming that has influenced animals a lot and it is a serious problem that the winter is generally disappearing. As I lived in an urban area in Hong Kong, I did not really feel the problems of climate change except heat. Though this virtual exchange, I had understood the weather change in other countries might have caused a natural disaster that affected human’s life, but it obviously came from the global problems in many countries. It is the responsibility of the citizens of the world and it really increases my awareness and triggers some thoughts to protect the environment.

For record the conversation:
Kitty was first proposed as the cause of global climate change is basically because of the heat contact of the surface of the earth which is driven by the sun. There is some solar radiation reaching the earth and heating the earth’s surface that raises the room temperature. Antony summarized that the seasonal temperature was changed in Hong Kong, we do not have the significant seasons and specific weather now. The winter has become less colder. And I proposed that the weather was changing suddenly in HK and the extreme weather events had significantly increased. Daryl shared the weather of Atlanta was getting hot, obviously more hot days and less cold days, which slow shifts in the way seasons are set up. It was dangerous to the animal's habitat and survival and it was not easy to fix it by migrating some species as it was a global problem. Kitty replied that HK are not that much animals as Atlanta, so she thinks it is acceptable in HK’s situation. Antony mentioned about the plants remaining green and less fallen leaves as more hot days. He confused the seasonal birds leaving HK might because of the changed weather. Kitty agreed that the increase of rainfall would raise the sea level. Some plants might receive too much water and become dying. I proposed that some kinds of flowers might not bloom on hot days. Daryl shared it has more rainy days and rarely snow in Atlanta. We only have heavy rain or typhoons in HK, but we think the snow might disappear someday because of the climate change.  The winter was shortened in HK, Atlanta and Xi’an, the routine and dressing in winter also changed. I had asked if the winter had disappeared, how would our life change? Daryl thinks some species will go extinct and the weather will cause more flooding without freezing and cold, and getting more storm seasons. Kitty thinks that compared with HK, the natural disaster is more dangerous to Atlanta. Antony mentions the definition of heat island effect and it affects HK as having many high buildings. Kitty agreed and thinks the urban area will produce more carbon dioxide because of cars and air-conditioners than rural areas.
