Lochia Alba: The final uterine discharge that is yellowish-white after childbirth, mainly made up of leukocytes, fat and fewer erythrocytes.
Lochia serosa: The uterine discharge of blood and mucus after childbirth that contains erythrocytes and leukocytes. Brownish in colour
Lochia rubra: The first uterine discharge comprising of blood, fetal membrane shreds, vernix caseosa and decidua. Red in colour.
Involution: The physiological process during which the woman's uterus returns to it's pre-pregnancy state following childbirth.
Rooming in: Period whereby the newborn spends time with their mother in the post-partum recovery rooms instead of being in the nursery.

Attachment: The emotionally deep bond formed between the baby and their mother/person providing most of their care.
Let down reflex: The release of milk from the breast as a result of the baby's suckling which triggers prolactin and oxytocin.
Baby blues: Feelings of sadness experienced by mothers after the delivery of the baby.
Engorgement: Tender breast swelling resulting from blood flow increase and supply of milk.
Fundus: The part of the uterus that is farthest away from its opening.
Lactation: The production and releasing process of the milk, regulated by hormones, from one's mammary glands in your breasts.
Vaccination: A pharmacological preparation usually containing weakened/killed micro-organisms (bacteria, virus, etc.) given by an injection to heighten protection from diseases.
Colostrum: First secretion of milk from mammary glands after delivery, rich in nutrition and antibodies which layer the immune system.
Haemorrhoids: Swollen vascular structures that form around one's anus or in the lower rectum.
Adaptation: The changes the baby and its systems undergoes from being intrauterine to surviving extrauterine life (fetus to neonate).
Skin-to-skin: A practice whereby a baby is laid belly-down directly on their mother's bare chest immediately after brth.
