Soil health is very important to the health of a nation. The point of the experiment was to test which nitrogen rich ingredient produced the most nutrient dense compost. Most compost are “heated manually” by hand turning the compost. Heating manually would be ideal to speed up the decomposition of the ingredients. However, if one is not doing a manually heated compost also known as a “hot compost”,then an abundance of nitrogen rich ingredients will be useful in heating the compost. Not only that but the use of worms will aid in the breaking down of the ingredients. Worms turn organic waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer. A worm compost is known as a vermicompost.This experiment tested which nitrogen rich ingredients will produce the most nutrient dense vermicompost. The materials tested were food scraps, coffee grounds and a cow and sheep manure mixture which acted as the food source for the worms. Each compost was tested for ammonium, carbon:nitrogen ratio, phosphorus and potassium. The null hypothesis stated that the manure mixture will produce the most nutrient dense compost because it is already digested and the nutrients should be easy for the worms to digest. The data supported the null hypothesis and the manure compost was indeed the most nutrient dense vermicompost.
