AutoCAD 2019 23.0
AutoCAD is used for 2D and 3D drafting, including mechanical, civil and architectural designs. In addition to drafting, AutoCAD is used for architectural layout, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering.
The user creates drawing elements using the mouse and keyboard to draw or edit elements such as lines, arcs, circles, text, dimensions, and views. It supports both single- and multilayer layouts, with the ability to divide layers or hide layers. The drawing elements are saved and edited as DXF or DWG files.

History 
AutoCAD is the fourth commercial CAD system, and is the only system to be continuously available since its release. It was originally developed by Arthur Engel, William DeRemer, and Tom Eckhardt at Autodesk and was first released on September 10, 1982.
Although the original beta release was distributed to individual developers, it was not publicly available until June 1987. Since that time, development has continued with new versions and updates.
AutoCAD is available on many platforms, including personal computers running Windows, Macintosh OS X, Unix-based Linux, and Microsoft Windows CE. In addition to these standard formats, AutoCAD is available for use on a number of handheld and tablet devices, including Microsoft Windows Mobile, and iOS and Android mobile operating systems. AutoCAD LT is a less expensive product that is also available for all of the same platforms, and offers limited functionality.
The original AutoCAD application shipped without a graphics editor, and was limited to polyline, polygon, and line/polyline editing functions. The first version to include a graphics editor was AutoCAD Release 1.02, which was released in March 1989.
With AutoCAD Release 2 in 1991, the application was renamed and a new user interface was added, allowing it to compete with other commercial CAD systems available at that time.
In 1997, AutoCAD was purchased by Autodesk Inc. and was re-branded as AutoCAD LT. Autodesk released the source code to the operating system underlying AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, PostScript Graphics, in 2005. Since that time, a number of AutoCAD features, including 2D and 3D modeling, paper space, and 2D annotation have been incorporated into AutoCAD LT.
AutoCAD is available as a free download from the Autodesk Exchange store.
On May 9, 2008, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD WS (Web Services), which allows AutoCAD users to transfer data between applications and applications and systems through the web. This was followed by the 2009 release of AutoCAD WS on the cloud.
ObjectARX was discontinued in October 2009.
In 2010, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD Architecture, a computer-aided design (CAD) application specifically designed for architecture.
